Bunions

What are Bunions?

Bunions appear as a large bump beside the great toe. This bump is actually part of the great toe joint, resulting from an abnormal "drifting" of your bone, the first metatarsal.  This progressive deformity can disrupt the normal function of your feet and cause pain along the entire kinetic chain - toes, ankles, knees, hips, back.

A comprehensive evaluation is critical to determining your cause of bunions and bone drift. Early management is key to long term success.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms can vary depending on the severity of your bunion pain, but can include swelling, inflammation, stiffness, redness, warmth, clicking, grinding, locking, shooting pain, and tingling. A bunion can cause the 2nd toe to lift up, leading to a hammer toe and further discomfort.

How we can help!

Our board-certified specialist is uniquely trained to treat bunions. Non-surgical options can significantly relieve pain and improve function, and ultimately eliminate the need for surgery for most patients. However, we do offer surgical management and operate at UNC-Rex in Raleigh for patients who require surgical care.
