Hammertoes
What are Hammertoes?
Hammertoes reflect an imbalance with the muscles, tendons, and ligaments that normally control the delicate bones and joints of the toes, primarily second, third, or fourth toes. The toe will appear bent and can sometimes overlap adjacent toes in severe cases.
This condition is related to poor foot biomechanics (bunions, arch structure, tight tendons), poorly fitted shoes, and abnormal gait patterns.
Symptoms of Hammertoes
Not all hammertoes are painful, however, some can become painful by rubbing in shoes and causing painful corns. Overlapping toes can deform neighboring toes, damage nails and cause painful corns.
Severe hammertoes can disrupt the function of the entire foot and lead to metatarsalgia, tendinitis, bursitis, capsulitis, and ligament damage. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical to long term success.
How we can help!
You need an expert to carefully evaluate your specific foot structure and gait pattern to effectively treat hammertoes. Custom orthotics that are designed to optimize gait function and redistribute impact forces is a key element in providing relief to our patients.
Surgery can be beneficial to patients suffering significant pain or deformity. Certain types of hammertoes can be treated in the office by selectively targeting a tendon in the toe. This highly effective procedure can provide excellent results and effective pain relief with little to no recovery time. Don't suffer any longer. We are here to help.
