Achilles Pain
What causes Achilles Pain?
Achilles pain most often results from Achilles tendinitis, a condition that involves irritation, inflammation, or degeneration of the Achilles tendon that connects the calf muscles to the heel. These issues are commonly caused by overuse, sudden increases in activity, tight calf muscles, or improper footwear.
Other causes of Achilles pain may include partial tendon tears, bone spurs at the back of the heel, overpronation, and biomechanical issues such as flat feet or high arches.
What are the symptoms?
Symptoms can vary depending on the cause of Achilles pain, but often include stiffness and pain along the back of the heel—especially with the first steps in the morning or after rest—tenderness, swelling, and discomfort with walking, running, or climbing stairs. Some patients may also experience a burning sensation, thickening of the tendon, or reduced flexibility.
